Civil Design Advantage (CDA) provided both preliminary and final site design for the new 42,000-square-foot Johnston Public Safety Building in Johnston, Iowa. This state-of-the-art facility houses Johnston’s Police and Fire Departments and offer a community space that is accessible to the public. The 4.5-acre site is one of the first projects to be developed within the new Merle Hay Road Redevelopment District, marking a significant milestone for the community.
Key improvements to the site include a secured parking area dedicated to police and emergency personnel, pull-through access for fire apparatus, evidence delivery and processing areas, and designated visitor parking and drop-off spaces. The site presented several challenges, such as a narrow lot size and minimal topographic relief, which necessitated creative and innovative design solutions from CDA.
Storm water management for the Johnston Public Safety Building incorporates multiple low-impact development strategies. These include bio-retention areas, underground detention systems, and infiltration basins designed to utilize existing sand seams. The landscaping plan emphasizes the use of plants native to Iowa, which not only complement the
building’s modern architecture but also play a crucial role in the functionality of the bio-retention basins. The overall design integrates form and function, ensuring the site is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sustainable.
